Flop Night: Sleepwalkers at the Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers, NY // May 10, 2014
We've moved on up to the east side (of the
Hudson River!) For our very first
Flop Night show at the Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers, we skewered the ridiculous Stephen King adaptation Sleepwalkers, in which a fully grown man plays a teenager who is also a cat-person who sleeps with his mother while hunting for human souls? (We think?)
After a long hiatus from live I Love Bad Movies screenings, it was great to team back up with our friends from The Flop House, who provided running commentary during the whole show and bits during the intermission. We also did our customary pre-show, which took on a decidedly strange turn -- inspired by the subpar effects which transform the creepy mother & son team from humans into were-cats, we merged all of our own faces with those of Internet cats. It was a night to remember, though we'd probably rather forget those cat-morphs altogether.

For our last Bad Movie Night at 92YTribeca, we welcomed summer with Jaws: The Revenge // June 8, 2013
92YTribeca's screening room unfortunately closed in Summer 2013, but they gave us one last night to show (and make fun of) a wonderfully terrible movie. We screened Jaws: The Revenge (a.k.a. Jaws 4), starring Michael Caine, Mario Van Peebles, and an awfully fake-looking shark. This time we moved on up to the Main Stage space with a built-in bar, so we and the other hosts didn't even have to leave the theater to get another drink!
Even in the bigger space, the house was packed with 175 people in the audience. We couldn't have asked for a better final event at our favorite space. Thanks for helping us send 92YTribeca into the ether in style!
From our event description on the 92YT site:
What’s a shark to do when his favorite family (to eat) leaves Amity Island for a vacation in the Bahamas? Somehow determine exactly where they’re headed and then swim fast enough to beat their flight, of course!
Michael Caine stars as a pilot named Hoagie (sandwiched into the role of “Just Barely Replacing Roy Scheider”), throwing his dignity into the propeller of an airplane which is later eaten by a shark. Mario Van Peebles also appears, conveniently answering the question, “Which of the Van Peebles is the respected actor-director-playwright, and which is the one who punched a shark in the face?”
Given a rare “zero stars” by the late, great Roger Ebert, this watery chum bucket of a sequel is the perfect way to ring in the summer season and all the cinematic disappointment it brings.

Brooklyn Zine Fest 2013 // April 21st, 2013
We're the organizers of this yearly fest -- the premiere New York City event for independent publishing. BZF 2013 featured zine makers from the five boroughs & beyond, including more than 70 writers, artists, & publishers. An estimated 2,200 attendees lined up down the block to fill Public Assembly in Williamsburg, pick up some great self-published magazines, and chat with the folks who make them. See photos of the event and more info at brooklynzinefest.com
Chicago Zine Fest // March 9th, 2013
We met lots of Illinois-based film enthusiasts & weirdos who stopped by our table at the Chicago Zine Fest on Saturday, March 9th, 2013 in the Conaway Center at Columbia College. Plus you can now buy copies of I Love Bad Movies at Quimby's Bookstore in Wicker Park! chicagozinefest.org
Bad Movie Night : Don't Tell Her It's Me at 92YTribeca // February 1st, 2013
For our fifth sold-out bad movie celebration with The Flop House, we chose a movie that we'd actually discovered via a VHS tape we found on the curb. (Fun fact: we've since had that VHS box signed by Guttenberg himself!)
See Kseniya's manly makeover slides & Elliott's Ziggy comparison at our Youtube channel.
Gus (Steve Guttenberg) is a live-action Ziggy who transforms into an overconfident, mulleted New Zealand biker named Lobo Marunga. In between, the Gutte is his usual charming self while his pesky sister (romance novelist Shelley Long) attempts to give him a Down Under makeover in this misguided romantic comedy starring a repurposed Mad Max costume.
Can Guttenberg pass as a legitimate Vegemite lover? Will the “Gusbuster” get his buster dusted by reluctant reporter Jami Gertz? Is life the same after seeing beloved character actress Beth Grant (Donnie Darko) demonstrate intercourse on a CPR doll?

Bad Movie Night: Bratz at 92YTribeca // December 15th, 2012
We presented another sold-out Bad Movie Night screening with our friends from the bad-movie podcast The Flop House. This time we featured Bratz: The Movie, a surprisingly fun flick aimed at teenage girls but weird enough for anyone.
See photos of the event at our Facebook page, or check out the slideshow and videos at our Youtube page.
When the principal’s daughter forces all of her classmates into hyper-specific cliques ("pretzel people," “Disco Dorks,” “kids who dress like dinosaurs”), four unusually stylish teenage girls of slightly varying ethnicities band together to unify the school and perform a bunch of weird songs. Along the way, there’s a deaf kid learning to DJ, a girl riding an elephant into her comically massive birthday party and the accidental destruction of a statue of Jon Voight.

"Bad Movies & the People Who Love Them" Variety Show at Public Assembly // September 19th, 2012
This time we stripped out the most mundane part of Bad Movie Night: the movie itself. If you've liked the pre-show entertainment and live commentary at our screenings, you'd love the all-variety format we brought to Public Assembly in Williamsburg on Wednesday, Sept. 19th.
See the promo compilation video here.
The night included slideshow presentations (on E.T. rip-off Nukie, instant classic Gigli, the "Dying Girls" genre and more), audience trivia with prizes, a panel talk, Q&A, and other fun junk, plus a bunch of rowdy ladies in the audience rallying behind Kseniya, the only (and best!) woman on stage. It was a great time!

Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story at the Museum of Arts and Design
As part of the Museum of Arts and Design's VHS exhibit and screening series, we hosted an ultra-rare viewing of the much-bootlegged classic, Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story.
Directed by Todd Haynes (I'm Not There, Velvet Goldmine), Superstar tells the doomed singer's sad story through Barbie dolls and copious (non-licensed) use of The Carpenters' music. After losing a copyright battle with Richard Carpenter, all copies of the film were recalled and destroyed, but luckily VHS bootlegs were made and have survived through the ages.
We were honored to be a part of this series, co-curated by our friend Matt Desiderio of Horror Boobs. (He's also the reason you can buy I Love Bad Movies at Forbidden Planet, the huge comic book shop near Union Square!)

This Must Be the Place: A Series of Actually Good Movies
Did you know that Kseniya was born in a far-away land? And that Matt has degrees in both geography and film?
All through summer 2012, we screened actually good movies at Postmark Cafe in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Each movie had a strong sense of geography, and in many cases, the location was actually its own character in the film.
We started with Raising Arizona and a presentation by reformed Arizonan and acclaimed storyteller Tom Blunt of the variety show and blog Meet the Lady. The series also included Some Like it Hot (Florida) with a live performance by ukelelist Kohli Calhoun; Elf (New York City) with the 1921 short Manhatta; Shag: The Movie with a group shag dance lesson by South Carolinian Rachel Kowal; and Paper Moon with a slideshow of Kseniya & Matt's trip to Kansas.

Bad Movie Night #3: Quiet Cool
Friday, June 8th, 2012 at 8pm
92YTribeca in New York
Event Listing at 92YTribeca.com
We teamed up again with The Flop House to present this unearthed gem, in which James Remar has to fight a bunch of henchmen whose varied hairstyles make them look like a Sex and the City-branded gang of marijuana growers. This movie opens with the best New York City vehicle chase (yes, better than The French Connection) -- with Remar on a motorcycle pursuing a rollerskating purse-snatcher through the subway system and into the New York Harbor.
If you missed it, you can still listen to the amazing Quiet Cool theme song.

Brooklyn Zine Fest 2012
Brooklyn Zine Fest (website)
Sun. April 15, 2012 from 11am to 6pm
at Public Assembly, 70 N. 6th St.
(between Wythe and Kent) in Williamsburg
Facebook page // Twitter feed
Kseniya and Matt co-organized this all-day event featuring the work of 60+ writers, artists, and publishers from Brooklyn and beyond. Everyone was exhibiting their zines (self-published magazines) about travel, non-fiction, comics, movies, music, food, comedy, personal stories, identity, and almost any other topic you could imagine.
We curated the event to include some of the best and most talented creators, including a few of our friends and a whole bunch of people whose work has inspired us along the way.
But most importantly, we made a ton of new friends, said hello to plenty of our fans who stopped by, and welcomed an ever-increasing mass of friends who wanted to check out the latest issue I Love Bad Movies. Some of our contributors even manned the table so we could have a few minutes to breathe -- and they sold zines faster than we did!

at Home Room // www.homeroom101.org
3121 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles

I Love Bad Movies presents the film that proves that a comedy doesn't need jokes as long as it features identical bodybuilders in ridiculous '90s fashions.
Watch as beefy twin "stars" the Barbarian Brothers protect bad seed 10-year-old twins from the mob, bankrupt a carnival, and physically assault people using playground equipment. (Warning: Barbarian Brothers' clothing accessories include Troll dolls, telephone cords for necklaces, bird nests for hats, and an overabundance of sheriff badges. May cause injury to eyes and/or brain.)
Pre-show entertainment includes a trivia round with prizes, and a brief pseudo-scholarly presentation condensing the long history of "burly babysitter" movies into five minutes of fun facts and film stills.
